Founded in 1987, American Journal of Rhinology was established to bring together a unified approach to the treatment of nasal disease from the perspective of the practicing allergy specialist, the otolaryngologist and the research scientist working within the field of diseases of the upper airway. At this point in time, clinical allergists were beginning to develop keen interest in endoscopy of the nose as an aid in diagnosing and treating their patients and, at the same time, many otolaryngologists were increasingly interested in immunology and IgE-mediated nasal disease. Accordingly, the need for a multidisciplinary journal that intersected these interests emerged.

Guy A. Settipane, M.D. a clinical allergist practicing in Providence, RI recognized this void and founded the journal. It was his vision that the journal serve as a clearinghouse of information important to the many diverse elements attempting to improve patient care and medical research. Most recently the journal has expanded its scope to publish manuscripts in the following categories: Diagnosis and Treatment; Surgical and Procedural Interventions; Mechanisms of Rhinosinusitis, Allergy and Other Rhinologic Diseases; and Nasal Physiology.

The first issue was published in the Spring of 1987 under the direction of two co-editors John T. Connell, M.D. and Larry E. Duberstein, M.D. Both specialists in nasal disease, John Connell represented the Allergy section while Larry Duberstein covered the Otolaryngology section. In 1991, Phil Fireman, M.D. replaced John Connell as Co-editor-in-Chief of the Allergy section and served in that capacity until 1994.

In 1989, David W. Kennedy replaced Dr. Duberstein as the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Otolaryngology section and in 2004 took over as the sole Editor-in-Chief, a position he still holds today. Under Dr. Kennedy's direction, the journal's scientific content has increased in both quality and quantity. Once a quarterly publication with an average of 7 original, peer-reviewed manuscripts published per issue (or 28 per year), the journal has grown to a bi-monthly publication with 24 original, peer-reviewed manuscripts per issue (or 144 per year) with over 300 manuscript submissions per year. Additionally, the American Journal of Rhinology has become the premier journal in Rhinology and has also evolved into one of the leading journals in the field of otolaryngology as measured by a strong journal impact factor.

The American Journal of Rhinology became the official journal of the American Rhinologic Society in 1991 and in 2004 was also named official journal of the International Rhinologic Society. In the years since the Journal was founded, Rhinology has become a true subspecialty in its own right as a result of the constantly expanding clinical and basic research within the field. The American Journal of Rhinology is committed to expanding knowledge and publishing the best clinical and basic research within the field of Rhinology from around the world.
